Exactly! I'm sure that more folks have been "ripped off" by shops than the other way around.
Just last week, a brother of mine was given a Gibbs square bridge magnum mauser (in .280
) by our mother and, knowing little about the gun, he took it to a dealer to get an idea of value and was told it was worth $750-$1000!I'm sure this was partly ignorance, but the shop MUST have had some idea of its true value. At least enough not to insult the owner!
It would be a good expose' project to take a valuable gun around for evaluation by some shops and by doing so, you would get an excellent idea of who the sheisters (or idiots) are in your town...
