Heck no, I don't think Elmer was a joke. I greatly admired the man.
I was just commenting on an artifact of great provenance that popped into my head. I have no doubt it would bring a fortune, but in my mind it's just a semen stained dress. I wouldn't want it if I had to keep it. It seems comical to me that such an item would command any money at all (the dress, not Elmer's rifle).
