Absolutely beautiful! Greg Martin Auctions do come up with some spectacular guns at every auction they hold! They also have some fine bargains from time to time.

Thanks for posting.

I am sorry, nice gun, but the gold inlays are overly-ornate for my taste. Just my opinion and just my taste. Dave

That's putting it lightly! It reminds me of baggy pants hip-hop guy's, lack of taste in too much "BLING"! All one needs to go along with that rifle is, an ESCALADE with GOLD 24" wheels, and fake Leopard upholstry!

Re: if only I had the money

I like this one(its less ornate than the rifle above)--its a 577 but the price is way outa my league as well as it being on the heavy side.

or how about this one!!!

The gun is a heavy one but the recoil calculates out LESS or equal to a 500NE at a slower 20fps velocity!

I think I would really like shooting that gun and watching a DG animal react to the impact!! I would NOT like carrying it.

Better yet, if I could have that gun in a 500NE at 10.5 pounds I would have a permanent grin!!
and the wife would wonder why I was acting so strange!!

Harry Marx has had this and that Maharajah, Holland & Holland 375 single trigger out for sale for years and years. I have handled each of these guns and they are quite nice, but they have the rechid "no sale-no trade" curse upon them... That's why their finally on the auction block.

Sinner

Can you explain further - ie if they were for sale, why didn't they sell ?

Re: if only I had the money

This would be the kind of Double I would obtain if possible. It is our own Bulldog's rifle and a treasure at that!!

The only changes I would possibly want would be claw mounts for a scope and the gun regulated for a scope.

But indeed if I did have such a gun I would probably do nothing but just shoot and appreciate it!!It would be gaining value just sitting in the safe!!

Re: if only I had the money

The gold engraving is nice enough to look at but makes the gun seem unusable.

High relief is nice, gorgeous, but doesnt seem aimed for use.(love it though)

Give me a Dougall or a Greener any day.....but one meant for use.(thats mostly what these guys made)

Thanks for the kind words. She is quite fetching in my opinion. Have thought about scoping her but I can't bring myself to actually having someone cut on her.

Bulldog,

No way would I scope that rifle. Follow your instincts as stated above. It's a beauty.

Re: if only I had the money

There is nothing wrong with a scope on a DR, and I have one now on a new Merkel 160 in 500NE. Why would you do that, you say? Eyesight is often a function of age, and a low power, bright and light scope will let you acquire a target faster than alinging ancient (59years)eyes on a bead a couple of feet down the barrels. Indeed, I tried a friend's Heym 470 with a large diameter 1X red dot claw mounted (as is my scope) and it was ligthing fast on picking up the aimpoint. Of course, these were all either factory claw mounts and regulated there or set up by the importer's gunsmith, who is factory trained and took the rifle with scope and intended load and made sure it was shooting to the intended point of aim before shipping. Removal, like most claw mounts, was fast and did not interfer with point of aim over the iron sights. As my signature says, time does indeed wound all heels and while I still shoot pretty damn well with open sights (I can still whoop my son's butt with a 1911 at 25yds) aging eyes need all the help they can get.

But scope a beautiful old DR that did not come with scope mounts? Hell no! Take a look at the marvelous scroll work and engraving along the top of the barrels in the photos. Why cover that up, or why screw around with a nicely-preserved bit of history adding anything?

My view is that we don't own our vintage rifles, we are merely the custodians until we pass them on when we do the same. I feel that way about several of my vintage doubles, just as I do with my collection of vintage Sharps. Dave

Bill, I'm not left handed, but I still like that rifle much better the the pimpmobile that started this string!
