Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

Hello Gents (& Ladies, of course),
I just returned from the 2005 NRA National Convention held in H-town and I wanted to report firsthand that I have held in my hands the long elusive urban legend of the $600 retail 45/70 double rifle- not by E.A.A. but by Remington!
It is in their Spartan line which is Russian-made.
The sales rep told me that their target date of availablity is September and that it was easily the most sought after rifle people wanted to see. They had no idea it would be so popular.
The double rifle is marked on the barrel for standard pressure 45/70 ammunition (READ: No hotloading to 458 Mag velocities). This is interesting in that this same rifle is also available in 30-06 caliber, which has a much higher max. pressure.
Both barrels are regulated to supposedly 100 yds.
One barrel is fixed, and adjustments to regulate the other barrel is made by a jackscrew on the underside of the forearm which pushes the non-fixed barrel to the side. This is what the salesman told me, I can't vouch for anything else. It does seem odd that one can push a barrel out to regulate it, though....
I have pictures that I hope will appear.
All in all, it appeared well worth the retail price and would be a lot of fun. Maybe some hog hunts?
Enjoy,
Joe

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

I can't wait to get my hands on one of each. The 45/70 will get loaded right on up there...a bit at a time, and the 30-06 will get bored and chambered to 9,3X74R...I wish they would make them in some better calibers. Somebody needs to get the hell over the American Nimrod mindset!!! These would be just right for fun guns in 7X57R, 7X65R, 8X57JRS, 8X65RS, 9,3X74R.

I like my EAA 94 BBF in 12/7X57R for the price. It is a bit crude but shoots great! In keeping with its quality and finish, I mounted a 40 year old Weaver K4 with 3/8" 22 rifle tip-off mounts... The whole mess works perfectly.

Wake Up Big Green!!! Get some appropriate calibers other than 45/70 into production and start loading the ammo. You may start a new fad. ...the "new" European calibers...

The Baikal which is the same rifle before being re-badged for the USA market is available in 9.3x74mmR and some other calibres. The "Spartan" rebadged rifle is only in .30-06 and .45/70.

Checked the website, they only list the .308 in addition to the others now (???). The calibre lines have contracted.

John,

It is just another case of narrow minded corporate market experts telling us what we want and need...

I spoke with Remington this past week and they said toward the Fall. ?????????????? My question is, I think they have a 1 in 20" twist and will this stabalize a 500 grainer from one of these doubles when I rebore it to 450 Nitro No. 2?????????? If not how about a 465 grain A-Square? Just thinking.

I think it will be a lot of fun. If only they would put better calibers in it. A 7X57 and 9,3 would be great fun. Maybe they will get some sense in their heads before its too late. Maybe emails would help?

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

I think reboring to a 45-90 or 45-110 would be better. You can still shoot ultra cheap 45-70 ammo for fun plinking. You also can load a pretty hot 4000FPE round. With the right bullet it will take any game on the plant. Its not a stopper, but you really don't need one when hunting with a PH any how.

If they ever release it, I'll get/use it as my double practice and North American Game hunting gun. I have no reason or desire to take my A. Hollis 500/450 NE into the woods, only Safari. Recoil on it is just too brutal/expensive to shoot more than 10 rounds. Think about it, you can by bulk 45-70 from many outfits for less than $.70 per round, and the recoil with this ammo is mild.

I want one. No screwing around trying to make it anything other than what it is. A fun rifle to play with and use on Blackies and Deer.

If the 45-70 was good enough for Custer it's good enough for me.

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

I agree just leave it 45-70. I could "play" DG safari all day long and not beat the piss out of myself. I find myself re-evaluating the amount of shooting I can do with the really heavy rounds. I shot about 60 rounds in the 12 bore yesterday testing some mods and heavy (165 grn FFg) DG loads. By the end of the day my head hurt so badly I become nauseated. This was 60 shots off the bench, which really is brutal, but I needed the accuracy.

BSAJoe,

Thanks for this fantastic piece of news. I am DEFINITELY buying one! For people like me who may never hunt in Africa this would be a fantastic, cheap double rifle.

I can't wait for them to show up at Basspro or Dick's Sporting Goods.

Thanks and good hunting!

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $

I hope when they are imported into Oz the markup isn't too unreasonable - US$600 -> A$800 sounds very reasonable, but my guess given the U/O Baikals are going to A$900 to A$1200 is they will be A$1200 +.

I would certainly give one a try for A$800, and perhaps join the enthusiastic .45/70 mob.

MagnumHunter & colorado:
Take a good long look at that step-down in barrel diameter just ahead of the existing chamber!

That should sober-up any thoughts of lengthening the chamber or shooting a higher-pressure cartridge!

Yeah I saw that too. I decided to just keep it a 45-70 play gun. If I can find somebody seller the damn thing! Some clown at mountain high hunting supplies claims to sell them, but I think he's full of s***!

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

The latest skinny is that Remington and Baikal have parted ways, and the gun is not going to be marketed by Remmy.

Anyone here hear anything?

I don't mind at all if the name on the rifle is Baikal.

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $

Are Savage-Stephens still in bed with Baikal, or is the Savage 411 no more? If they are still partnered together, it would seem logical that Savage picks up the rifle. Then again, nobody ever accused business of strictly adhering to logic. As far as the name is concerned, I could care less what is stamped on it, as long as its produced and brought out in some more practical calibers; i.e. 9.3X74R, or some of the afforementioned canidates. Even an offering in .303 would be nice, and make more sense to me than '06.

Re: Remington Spartan 45/70 Double Rifle- retail $559

I have a guest, a young competitive shooter from India whom I shall be taking on a tour of the gun shops in the Chicagoland area on Saturday. I'll ask around the bigger chains - Gander Mountain, Dick's and Bass Pro and smaller shops like Barry Levin's Des Plaines shop and Shore Galleries which is a quarter mile away from my place - someone should know something. Let's see what they have to say.

In case someone else is able to check before I can, please do post here. Baikal/Remington should be glad that there is probably more interest in these guns than there is in any other new launch in a long time. Now, if only they would start selling them while people are still interested...

Cheers!

News this AM from Remington:

"The double rifle (SPR 22) and the single shot (SPR 18) rifle have not been release for sale at this time. Due to quality issues with mass production we are unable to release at this time these firearms with the Remington name. We hope to be able to release these guns mid to the end of 2006."
