Caliber Francotte Double Rifle ?

I have inherited rifle, marks Auguste Fracotte nº 79700, but I am not safe of the caliber that uses, in the tubes takes punched 450 Balle Plomb. A cartridge of caliber 450NE 3"1/4, enters perfectly, but I do not dare to shoot. Somebody can say to me that it calibrates to be? Aticipadas Thanks. Angel

in all case you have a new gun and don't know the cartridge its chamber cast time. use sulfur or cerro safe or something other that works and slug the barrel, the .45 round ball may be good for the job. I you havn't done this before ask you gunsmith or somethink who knows. I believe this firm still exist in belgium, make a try with google. if the 450NE fit the chamber be careful, allways the chance that this gun is only made for the 450BPE. Same case but different pressure.

Francotte does no longer exist although many of his rifles and shotguns are still in service. His doubles, smooth and rifled, were of top quality and quite expensive. The stamping means ".450 lead bullet".

Rusty forwarded your pictures. "B. Plomb" means a rifled barrel intended for lead bullets. "B. Blindee" means a rifled barrel intended for jacketed bullets. .450 Nitro Express cartridges were loaded with jacketed bullets and .450 Express (black powder express) cartridges were loaded with lead bullets, usually paper patched. Thus, I believe your rifle to be a .450 Black Powder Express. Do NOT fire .450 Nitro Express ammunition in it.
The chamber cast suggestion is a good idea. The proof marks would be the same for the .450 3 1/4" BPE, the .500/.450 3 1/4" BPE, the .500/.450 No. 1 BPE, etc. The .450 3 1/4" BPE was the most common and since it fits the chamber, that is probably what it is. Never hurts to check though.
Have the rifle checked over by a competent gunsmith. If it is safe to fire with blackpowder loads, it is safe to fire with smokeless black powder equivalent loads (nitro for black). Loading data is available.
The Francotte rifles were ususally of excellent quality. In good working order, a .450 BPE double would make a perfect boar rifle. I certainly wouldn't mind inheriting a rifle like that.

Double rifle Auguste Francotte built 1926 caliber 600 Nitro Express.
