Proof stamp register.

Wouldnt it be a great thing if there was a register of proofmarks on NE?

At least on the english and german ones.

Yes, there is a great need for it. Unfortunately, none has been compiled yet that I'm aware of.

There are errors in both of these links:

http://www.shotguns.se/html/proofmarks.html

Worse, such references only address each mark separately, which is counterproductive. These marks are used together as a SYSTEM, and must be viewed as such to be understood. Pity CIP hasn't published such a work.

I have a pretty good book of proofs from several countries. This is available from the German Gun collectors Association web under books. I think it is titled Definitive Book of Proof Marks.

That is the only book to use IMHO and everyone should
own a copy.

Re: Proof stamp register.

For the British guns, the coverage of proof in Volume II of Brown's "British Gunmakers" is the most accurate and coherently presented I've found. Sadly, like virtually all other reference works on British proof, it's shotgun centric, and of only some help with rifles. I use Wirnsberger too, but his coverage of rifles is poor as well and, again, contains errors, although not as many as most works do.

What is needed for this site (dedicated to double rifles) is an accurate and coherently presented treatise on British proof of rifles under the rules of 1875, 1887, 1904, 1925, 1954, etc., as well as the common loads usually marked for each caliber for proof purposes. Again, I know of nothing like that that's been published.

NE is happy to host such a list online. If people want to submit good graphics, explanations etc, we can certainly put it up.

A definitive online list would be a great idea.

Re: Proof stamp register.

My "The Standard Directory of Proofmarks" is in a box in a container somewhere between here and Texas! I guess with my over 30 ( or 40 or 50) brain, I got the title wrong. Still, it is the better reference.

You can change your location info in the profile if you make it to springtime here... LOL
