Monday was the opening of the shotgun season hereabouts. I was sitting in my pop-up blind before first light, with my 12 bore double rifle across my knees. About 8:30 a very large doe stepped out of the swamp about 40 yards in front of me. I have 3 doe tags to fill so I put the big ivory night sight on her ribs and put a Lightfield slug through the lungs. She collapsed where she stood and died within seconds. I've killed well over 100 whitetails but I've never seen a doe this big. She is full of fat and since she didn't run and pump the tissues full of adrenaline, I believe that she'll make darned good eating. It's always nice to make a good fast kill and it's even nicer when you're able to do it with a gun that you built yourself. Back at it tommorrow! |
