I've always thought the 1873's WERE .45 Colt chambered, but it was the S&W Schofields (also issued) that were chambered for the .45 S&W, a 1/10" shorter than the Colt ctg. which of course, would not chamber the longer case.
I shot a borrowed Schofield in .45 S&W in a cowboy action match.
