I have a suggestion for your stock/engraving issues. First, I agree with all who say don't put on additional wood. Regarding recommendations, I have just receieved a Mod. 70 engraved by Paula Biesen in Spokane, WA and she did a great job. She does the engraving for the Biesen rifle shop. Her dad Roger and grandfather Al have been for years pre-eminent stockmakers of premium rifles and shotguns of the highest quality. It could be a "one-stop-shopping" for you with both stock work and engraving should you choose it. They have my recommendation without reservation and besides are great people to talk and work with.------------Bill
