I had the privilege of actually firing a Thompson at an indoor range in LA when we were over in the US, 10 years ago now - it was a blast for sure!
Here in Oz these are totally banned, so I made the most of it when I did.
They are surprisingly heavy for their size
Yeah, I visited the Gun Store in Las Vegas a couple of times in 2007 and shot the Tommy-gun. I was surprised by the attempted muzzle climb of the 45ACP in auto mode - like you said, it's a heavy gun.
