During GDR times the communists mistrusted their avarage hunters, in spite of having them checked alwys for political "reliability". Noone except high-ranking party officials was allowed to own or use a firearm with a rifled barrel. So most big game hunting had to be done with smoothbores and Brenneke type slugs. As much hunting was for wild boar to protect crops, a lot was done under low light conditions. Under such conditions you have to see the target before you can shoot. So it was common practice then to mount scopes on double barrel shotguns (no pumps or selfloaders allowed!). Zeiss Jena scopes and claw mounts were the only ones available. |
