Just got back from deer hunting in central PA for the first week of rifle season. I decided that I was going to take my Remington-Lee 1899 and my Steyr model 1905 carbine out in the woods. I was invited to hunt at my stepson's and his father's cabin. This is an area that I have not hunted before. I only saw tails the first 2 days of hunting. Monday morning, I went a little deeper into the woods where I sat Sunday evening. Around 7:45 I see 2 does walking my way at a distance of about 65 yards. Both deer appeared the same size to me. The lead doe was looking in my direction and then presented a broadside shot to me. I placed my sights just behind the front shoulder and pulled the trigger. The doe ran about 25 yards before hitting the ground. The 30-40 Krag cartridge and the 220 grain round nose bullet did its job. I was happy to have been able to make a 1 shot kill. A little disappointed that she was smaller than I was expecting but unfortunately hunting is not a catch and release sport. It makes me happy to be able to get this old rifle back out into the woods and let her do what she was made for. I couldn't ask for a more perfect way to finish out this particular project.
