I should add that if my example is typical, the 1899 Remington Lee sporters retain the magazine cut-off typical of early Lee-designed infantry rifles.
It does not actuate until the magazine is removed, and hence can easily escape notice.
I was reminded of this when watching Ian's video on the 1899 military pattern linked from kuduae's post.
