Two things about this thread: 1. I can't believe in two pages of posts over the years no one with a sense of humour succumbed to the temptation to post a picture of Captain Quint with his Greener. 2. Since these guns are also used for line-throwing, I'll share a story. When I was an apprentice, one of my supervisors told us about working in the machine shop at the local naval dockyard. The shop was located right on the jetty, where the destroyers tied up. They were in the habit of shooting a line to the dock, for the men on land to pull the mooring lines over. One day, the "marksman" involved missed his mark and shot it straight through the machine shop window. Without missing a beat, the shop sweeper grabbed a white(ish) rag, tied it to the end of his broomhandle, and waved his improvised white flag out the broken window in surrender. The captain sent apologies on behalf of his ship (and possibly a peace offering, unofficially). |
