Re: Savage Model 45 Super Sporter .300 Savage

Quote:

Thanks for this post - very handsome rifle. I have a Model 20 in .250 Savage which I really like, but I've passed on several Super sporters at very reasonable prices in the past because it always looked ungainly to me - your photos and commentary have changed my mind. I also like the Remington 30, especially the 30-S and have one good one. Do you know where I can read more on Grancel Fitz?

Thank you . Your model 20 is a most excellent rifle .I believe Savage discontinued it because it was too short of an action to use the 30-06 cartridge .Rumours say Savage made a few in 30-06 unsuccessfully. Sadly Savage changed the Super Sporters stock in 1936 from the British Express style stock that mine has to a severe splinter fore end with a schnable Germanic style that was very unpopular. They also moved the magazine release to a hole on the right side of the new designed stock that was even more unsightly. The early rifles as mine is were quite nice however and very user friendly and well made .Mine is a joy to shoot and hunt with. Grancel Fitz was one the first if not the first hunter to take all 25 big game species in North America (took him 30 years to do it) .Amazingly he did it with one rifle ; a custom stocked Model 30 Remington Express built by Griffin and Howe in 30-06 calibre with a 2-3/4 power German Zeiss scope .Fitz used to laugh at all the calibre arguments stating the 30-06 was good for anything ;and proved it was the hunter that mattered not the calibre of the rifle .He used the same rifle throughout the world with equal success . http://www.wildsheep.org/magazines/article_true_1948.htm
