Yes the 300 Savage was originally made to approach 30-06 ballistics with 150 and 180 grain loads . I believe the velocities were 2,700 for a 150 and 2380 for a 180 out of a 22 inch barrel . As stated earlier I chronographed some old Winchester Silvertip 180 ammo and it clocked around 2,400 in this rifle . Actually the 7.62x51 or 308 Winchester was a direct result of the 300 Savage . The Savage round was to be used in the New US M14 rifle but the designers wanted a slightly longer neck and the 308 was born .
