Re: Custom 300 H&H on Pre-64 Action

I bought the rifle used. It consisted of a Winchester 300 H&H barrel attached to a non-300 H&H (no groove on the back of the front receiver ring) Pre-64 action....

I wish you would elaborate a little more about your Model 70. Lack of the indentation on the rear of the receiver ring is certainly an indication that the action was not intended for magnum cartridges when it left the factory. However, was the receiver bridge altered to allow magnum length cartridges to load easily? A genuine Model 70 magnum action has a rounded portion of the receiver ring milled out, removing the part of the bridge where the front screw hole for a scope mount is found, dictating the use of a special base with the holes located closer together.

Also, if that is a Winchester barrel, it appears to have been modified by removing both the front sight ramp and the rear sight hump.

Steve Nelson is really a accomodating person. I was able to pay him a visit on my last trip to Corvallis, and he took time off from his work to show me around his shop and exhibit some of his creations. Particularly interesting was his Mauserlicher, a combination of a Mauser bolt with a Mannlicher-Schoenauer action which results in the best of both actions, and removing the objectionable features of the Mannlicher, like the split bridge and the bolt handle located to far forward.
