Gallagher Carbine (1861) & Burnside(1855), developed a bit earlier than the civil war, I think. both of these needed percussion caps for ignition. For totally contained ctg, the .22 and other rim fires pre-civil war & civil war period preceded the inside primed .57/70 of 1868, which quickly became outside primed (externally seated primer).
