This sounds very much like the temps I use for my knives.

I actually temper the edge at 177 degrees Celsius, but I use a differential process giving the spine of the knife and ricasso a spring temper, and the rest of the tang being left dead soft.

Also, I use used motor oil as a quenching medium. Costs me nothing and works great.
