I think such a device would affect regulation of a rifle to a considerable amount.

On a shotgun probably not a big difference.

Maybe when ball or shot fails, one can protect oneself froma boar with the bayonet? And especially so for muzzle loading guns.

But for muzzle loading guns, watch out when you use the ramrod reloading your gun!
