I've carried it for 33 yrs The only other knife that I'll carry and it is mainly used as a back up to my bow or muzzle loader, it is a bowie with a ten inch blade. I'm about to retire the bowie though as I'm building a new knife from scratch. It has a little more point and can be driven through those tough hides of a bear if the occasion calls for it as it did this year during muzzle loading season. I had no back up weapon except my western knife which is always tied in with a piece of rawhide. The bear charged as I was reloading ( couldn't get the sabot started in the barrel) when it was with in ten feet I decided to retreat quickly. Next time I'll have my back up weapon!! Sometimes you get the bear..sometimes the bear gets you!!! But on the end of the day I think it is all about personal preference and the different hunting cenarios or circumstances. Moss, I think you are glad that you did'nt have to go on that hand to hand battle with the bear.If you survived it, it would've made one hell of a hunting story. Here in South-Africe there is a museum in the Kruger National Park where a lion skin hangs that was killed by a game ranger with the name of Harry Wolhuter. He was out on patroll on his horsewhen 2 lions attacked. He was flung from the horse and the one lion went for the horse and the other for him.He killed this unwounded lion with his knife.
