I have friends that swear by the Lansky kits that are available from Cabelas here in the states. They have a jig that keeps you at the proper angle. Personally I prefer a plane old stone. With practice, it is not to hard to get a razor sharp edge with a stone. And the stone will by far be your cheapest route. Steel is a factor on how hard a knife is to sharpen. Softer steels are the easiest to put a nice edge on but they will dull more quickly as well. Some of the real hard steels on the market make puting an edge on, with anything, difficult.
