Re: Home made boar spear

Friend of ours, an Archer who grew tired of shooting 6' to 7' black bears with his compound bow, borrowed a Plains-Indian Lance my brother made. The lad practised with is all winter, took it back to Taylor for sharpening, then took a nice 6'3" black bear on his spring bear hunt. The entrance hole admitted his size 10 entire felt pack boot, while the slash in the ribs where the spear came out was only about 5" wide across 4 ribs, only big enough for the toe up to the instep of his boot.
; The spooked bear was running towards him on a trail but didn't know Bob had moved over onto the same trail. At a range of about 7' or 8', Bob launched the spear into the bear's chest as hard as he could throw - THAt boy had an arm any javelin thrower would be proud of. The spear's velocity coupled with the bear's forward motion, drove the spear through the chest with a good 11" wide hole, cut the heart into two, lacerated one lung then the diaphram and some guts to exit just in front of a rear leg. The bear collapsed on impact. The spear didn't have a "cross tree" on it. They are useful only if you hold onto the spear to keep the animal at bay while someone else chops off it's head with a sword. THAT'S bear hunting. Only in Canada you say? Pity! Or is it PITA?
