I live in a quickly developing area. One county I like went to "slugs only" several years ago, which has curtailed my hunting there. Last weekend I went to work on a recent project - I'd picked-up a "as new" Mossberg bolt gun and later a new M-500 rifled barrel, both for much less than $200 total. I had my heart set on one of the Geha Mausers but just haven't connected on one at the right price. In turning the barrel shank I discovered the M500 barrel actually has a sleeve over the 24tpi threads I needed for the receiver. Still took some delicate fitting to get it all timed and working right but test firing made it all worth while - three, three shot groups with "what I had ammo" produced two groups with all holes touching and the third only slightly wider! This was intended to be a beater gun with a low power scope and a Tupperware stock but after seeing what she'll do a buddy convinced me to fit her out in walnut and express sights - just for the hell of it. As the project progresses I'll try to get some pics up. If you've considered such a project I'd encourage it, but only with the newer generation bolt guns (or one of the Mausers). A lot of the old ones relied solely on the bolt root as a locking lug and there are horror stories of it letting go. |
