I think the 12 bore has often been thought as British, the 16 bore as Continental and the 20 bore as American.

Of course the 12 gauge has always been American as well.

I don't think the 16-bore has been that popular here in Australia, but occasionally one does come across one, maybe one in two hundred or even less.
