Mod., medium relief game scene engraved case hardened frame, with horn triggerguard, pistol grip and buttplate; receiver is nicely decorated with Germanic scrolls, red deer and wild fowl. Barrels marked with ''(crown)/S'', ''U'' and ''W'' proofmarks, as well as eagle nitro markings, with top of barrel marked ''Wittner/Excelsior''. Factory checkered European walnut cheekpiece pistol-grip stock. The caliber 8x72R is in fact a necked-down variant of 9.3x72R. Condition is fine. Barrel assembly retains approx. 90% blue with most of the losses just above forend. Detail to engraving remains fine, as does checkering, with only minor flat spots from handling and field use. Horn components remain mostly excellent. Buttplate with very small loss at toe. Rear sight blade elevates when rifle barrel is selected. Action remains tight, bores are excellent. Reloading dies are included"

looks like a double gun now with SN 4556 but the engraving speaks about some kind of combination gun for Collath No.3 (14 ga) and 24 ga what was a common bore rifle caliber between 1870 and 1890.maybe there were double rifle barrels or combination gun barrels too for this gun once.

W.Collath Drilling original Cal.4 and 11,15x65R, SN 11246
seems the rifle barrel got an insert for a small .22 caliber cartridge.

"W. Collath Triple Barrel shotgun and rifle. Double barrel shotgun on top and 22 barrel on the bottom. Here are the marking I could find on the gun:

C4 11x65
11246 L
Wittener Excelsior (on the top of the double barrels)
Patent W. Collath
Frankfurt A/O"

W.Collath Söhne Drilling 20 ga and 9,3x80R, rifle barrel for a .22 caliber cartridge now

" By W.Collath and Sohne Frankfurt. Underlever opening. Activation the lever cams the 26" barrels forward about 3/8ths inch which htne allows them to break open like a conventional shotgun. Wonderful bit of German engineering. Originally chambered in 20 gauge and 9.3x80 rimmed. The rifle barrel has been relined to .22 Savage High Power or .219 Zipper but the correct cartirdge has not been determined. The 20 gauge barrels have 2-3/4" chambers. It also has a pop up sight in the rear tang and claw type scope mount bases. The grip cap, butt plate and opening lever are horn. Grey receiver. Bores are in very good condition. The barrels have been reblued. The stock has been changed over to black walnut."
