Re: A Morning with German Dogs and a German Gun

Hallo Herr Jäger,

very beautiful dogs. I have a dog of the same breed, and it might interest you what kind of breed they really are. The black and white shorthairs are nowadays officially part of the German Shorthair breed. However, they are a unique breed to themselves, which has been forgotten.

I happened to come across a book from 1905, in which they were listed as 'Prussian Shorthairs'. Prussian, because the colors of Prussia were black and white. Furthermore, as opposed to the regular shorthairs, they have a healthy dose of pointer blood in them, which accounts for their color, somewhat more stout appearance and larger teeth. They are also have a better nose then the regular shorthair, but, true to their pointer heritage, will retrieve, but not as willingly as a normal shorthair. Of course they point perfectly.
