The 458 WM is popular among certain sambar hunters here in Victoria, with the light-weight old CZ rifle top of the heap. Before semi-autos were banned, one or two BARs were converted to the calibre and this seemed the bee's knees against big running stags.

Unlike almost anything smaller, the 458 seems able to knock them down on the spot with a decent chest shot. That's not overkill but what we should want. I have not heard complaints of the straight case causing chambering or extraction probs - but sambar are not elephants. They often only give you one shot at them, as might tembo, travelling in the other direction.
