I have located some Federal 400-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw loads and I will look for the Woodleigh loads. Part of my problem is that my Mauser 98 sporter (purchased from owner in Alaska) was evidentally made on an M-48 frame. 500 grain solids lodge in the magazine and I have to shave the tips of my 510-grain loads or they will too. Otherwise the rifle is perfect for what I wanted. Hogue synthetic stock, excellent open sights, nice heavy 9 lb. weight, solid construction, good trigger... If I can find effective 400-grain loads the rifle ought to do fine. I'll probably only hunt with it once in Africa but I'd like to use it in Alaska and the northern Rockies for bear and moose. If I can't solve these issues then I guess I'll trade the #1 and the Mauser off for a Weatherby or other large frame .458 Win Mag. I have no interest at all in a .458 Lott. I'm at the end of my recoil tolerance with these guns. |
