I use a 22" barrel on my .450 Watts and use a 20" twist, which allows me to shoot .450 Watts and .458 Winchester interchangeably (nice option to have in an emergency). According to John Buhmiller, who was my guru in such matters, the 14" twist was unnecessarily fast, and would not allow the use of both cartridges. When you consider that the standard .45-70 twist is 20", using much lower velocity, then you wonder why Winchester went with the faster one. (The twist used for the .470 NE is even longer: 21".) A 22 inch barrel on a bolt gun is about the same over all length as a 26" barrel on a double rifle and just as handy. Using a cartridge with an expansion ratio like the Lott, you're not sacrificing enough velocity to make a difference. |
