Eric, the Model 70 receiver is much stiffer and much more rigid than the Mauser 98 receiver, and it serves as a better accuracy platform. The front action screw being positioned BEHIND the recoil lug, rather than straight up into it, is another real improvement over the '98, plus the recoil lug is much larger as well, and the locktime is much faster. You can look at both actions side-by-side and see many of the differences for yourself. That was one of Winchester's key objectives when the Model 70 was developed back in the 1930s -- to create a design than provided improvements over the Mauser 98 and Springfield that enhanced accuracy, yet did not compromise feeding or function.
