Y'know Alan, I find that an interesting statement. I've always felt that the high velocity recoil from the .338 is far more unpleasant than the slower, if heavier, recoil of the .375. That may be due to the fact that my .375, Lily Martel, weighs in a 9.5 lbs in fighting trim and the .338's I've shot have been considerably lighter. I may be old, arthritic and bad-tempered but I find that despite the fraudulent old saw about "you carry it a lot more than you shoot it" a rifle with heft hangs more still in aiming, absorbs recoil better and gives the shooter greater confidence than some poofy little pencil. Featherweights for featherheads, IMO!
