Re: Westley Richards CTG??

In reply to:

Has anyone ever heard of a cartridge named"Westley Richards No#1 carbine cartridge"

Yes, I was lucky enough to acquire a 'sleeper' Westley Richards Improved Martini Henry a few years ago, chambered for this cartridge.

In reply to:

Is this a 577-450 or based on this case?

No, It is a bottle-neck .500/.450 with a case-length of 1.56 inches. It was originally loaded with 55 grains of BP beneath a 380gr patched lead bullet.

My 'inherited' nitro-for-black load for this cartridge is a 300gr Taipan over 33gr 4759, though I'll have to develop an ADI equivalent at some stage. In my rifle its surprisingly accurate, but a bit underpowered, more like an oversized rook calibre. Having failed to impress the Brit Military, Westley Richards proceeded to market the Improved MH in .500/.450 No.1 Carbine as their 'Kangaroo Gun' in the Antipodes!
