I love everything about the rifle including the scope and the way it is mounted. All business. Didn't Harry Selby switch to the .458 late in his career? I think it was, horror of horrors, a post-64 push feed Model 70. I believe the cartridge took some heat early on because the factory ammo didn't live up to published velocities. That has since been remedied I think. When I was in my teens, I knew an eccentric old guy who had two Browning Safari rifles - one in .375 and the other in .458. He carried them in the trunk of his car. We would shoot those things in the middle of the night, mostly at trees to study the penetration. (very understanding farmer and very large tract of land). The .458 penetrated pretty well with factory ammo of the day as I remember. |
