My grown up kids and grandchildren all call my Mauser 404 the "elephant gun". Three of the boys are in their 30's and 40's and having fired the 404 with cast bullets they decided that is enough for them and haven't fired it with full power loads.
They all use 7mm-08's or my 7mmWSM, all having suppressors with built in muzzle brakes so they do not know what real recoil is. Their gas operated shotguns are as close as they get to anything with a bit of recoil.
Like a lot of situations these times, grandpa is a bigger man than the kids and grandkids. Hopefully they see the eyes of the world through grandpa and look further afield.
I remember my Dad showing the cannon shell of a .30-06 of mine to a distant relative. They though it was an elephant cartridge.
I remember as a kid thinking a .577 Snider round was the biggest cartridge on Earth.
PS I wanted one back then already.
