No question about it, go for the pre '64 Model 70. If it doesn't have cross bolts, have it fiberglass bedded, at least in the tang area. I have a new Model 70 375 and it is a great rifle, but it ain't no pre '64. Besides having a classic, vintage rifle that is one of the best (some would say THE best) American manufactures ever made, it will be a constant reminder of your friend. Buy it.
