I have read somewhere else what the bullets were in the Grey incident. From memory they were not suitable for a lion, at least a thoroughly riled lion that is presenting a rapidly increasing frontal shot, lighter and poorly constructed.

I guess the long-for-caliber 7x57mm had immense penetration and if placed accurately did the job, especially solids such a Bell used.

Will try and find other information about the Ross Grey used.
