I thought I'd let you know about a cartridge I developed a few years ago. It shoots a 0.458" bullet at 2,120fps from a 22" barrel and fits in a standard length action. Sounds like the 458 Winchester Magnum. Well it is, sort of. I rebate the rim to 0.490 and recut the extractor groove, leaving the belt intact, of course. This allows me to use it in my Mauser 66 without changing the bolt head so I can, in 30 seconds drop out my 243Win barrel (in which I use 55gn Nosler Ballistic tips at 3,850fps) and switch to the 458. Not an earth shattering development but with the 270, 30-06AI and 9.3x64 barrels it makes a convient combo and what's more, it only counts as one rifle on my licence, which, in the dark days ahead, may be very, very important. mike |
