Why not one gun - but with easily changed, multiple barrels? A fellow over on a small bore forum, has 3 Savage rifles(to make the switching simpler. For those 3 Savage rifles, he has 14 different barrels chambered for cgts. in three groups - .378" bolt face, .470" bolt face and .532" bolt face - so his barrels run from .17 Mach IV to .416 Remington magnum with many in between. You actually do not 'really' need 3 different rifles, as if a person has just one of those rifles, but the 3 different bolt faces, he can interchange to every ctg. the fellow noted above can change to. One would need to start with a magnum action, though - might seem 'big/long' for the .17MK4 or the .22-250's, .308's, etc. The Savage system of changing barrels is perfectly modeled for the one gun - 20 different ctg. shooter - if he so wishes. Someone of that site noted that he was changing over 1 or more of his 'other' rifles (Remington) to the Savage System. All he had to do was to make his own collars & thread the barrels long. The system is a wonderful one as NO headspace gauges are required - the 'work' of changing the barrels can be done on the kitchen table and headspacing is accomplished using your own ammo, wind the barrel in with round in the chamber until it stops against the bolt, lock the locking ring and down - thus, headspace is always 0 - which is perfect. Might still be able to Google "Sharpshooter Supply" for info on replacement Savage barrels. IIRC- $325.00 - chambered, contoured, finished and ready to drop into your action - Innexpensive to the extreme! |
