Hello Robert1, Igorrock,

Thank you both for your replys. Slugging the barrel will be on my "to do" list for the weekend, unless the beass shows up, in which case I'll just try a few rounds with the Hawk bullets.

Hello eagle27,

It shoots both the 10.75x68 RWS 347gr bullets and .404 RWS 400gr bullets perfectly.

When you say it shoots the .4o4 RWS bullets perfectly, are those actually .404" diameter?

Should be .423 I think.

The .404 Jeffery is always referred to as shown, .404 but the bullet diameter (groove diameter) is .423". The .404 Jeffery is aka 10.75x73 so is exactly the same barrel as the 10.75x68.

Some, including myself, believe the 404 nomenclature comes from 40 cal with 4 cartridges available in the Jeffery (Mauser) bolt action rifle. Jeffery's advertising made great store of the 4 available shots from his rifles and of course it is a cartridge in what is widely known as the 40 calibre group (.404J, 416R, 425WR)
