UK & Cyprus in my case)are:

a. The person who lives elsewhere but hunts, or wants to hunt, in Africa.
You wouldn't want to be firing that .416 or whatever for the first time at
a live dangerous game animal; and

b. I like them!

Would love to hear from others who NEED them elsewhere.

Well actually the .375 is probably enough for any animal on the face of the earth, but if you are facing an enraged Grizzly, Brown or Polar bear, the added security of a .416 Rigby or .458 Win. mag. feels pretty good.

I am taking my .416 Rigby to Zimabawe next june. I have done extensive practicing with it and feel very comfortable with it. But do I need it for anything else on earth? Good Question. I suppose if I was after some of the monster brown bears in Alaska or Kamchatka, I would feel more secure with it than a .375 or a .338.

But your point B is very good. I could have bought a lesser expensive gun in a .416 Remington Mag, or perhaps a hotted up .375, but dammit, I am going to AFRICA to hunt large African game and I am determined to use an African caliber. Since I cannot afford a .470 Nitro Express, the Rigby will have to do, as I am sure it will, if I do my part.

Safari's answer has hit the nail whose head I was trying to strike. Those of us who don't live in Africa want (I think) to encompass the entire 'African Experience' even if our idea of that may be 50 years out of date. This is certainly true in my case. So, a .30-06 would make sense, but I'd rather use a .318 Westley Richards. A .416 Rigby, as Safari owns - perferct! - but it would have to be by a London or Birmingham maker, if I could afford it. A .458 might be logical to most people, but compared to a .416, a.465 H&H, a .475 No 2, or a .470 Nitro Express, well, what can I say? The cost of my dreams is another issue.

I really do have the greatest respect for you, Dantri. You are a professional making a hard living out of the things that most of us dream about. Part of our (well, at least my) dreams are those old rifles that our forebears used . I, for one, would like to keep that part of our history alive. I'm saving up to put some work you way, if you'll accept.

Firstly, INO if you have an itch, scratch it.

Secondly, I think a 375 is more than adequate for Australia and probably adequate for everything in Europe and North America as well. However if I was being completely practicle and logical I would buy a 338 and a 416 today and both as a pair would cover about everything that is needed.

However why be logical and practicle! I would like to have a 470 NE double, teamed with a 416 (or similar) just for fun. And a 45 of some description, and something unusual like a 465 would be good.

Great choice if you can get one. A 318 WR, very classic. I still trying to decide between a 8x68S or a more modern and sensible 338 Win Mag.

I'm glad that I've got this kind of report back from you guys.I agree totally with all of you.Why be practical.I shoot a 460Wby Mag cause I want to and not because it's the best option.
