I might as well jump in. The marlin is NOT strong enough for really HOT 45/70 loads, the ruger #1 is, but it's a single which rules it out for DG, period. Just for the record, The 45/70 can be loaded with ease to drive a 400 grain woodleigh bullet to OVER 2150 fps - I have done it with my Ruger #1. That will EQUAL the much praised 450/400. So, this discussion is really about the Marlin and not the 45/70.
