the problems with the 458 win came around as soon as it was brought out. winchester made it to fit in a standard length action. This did not allow enough powder capacity to get to that 2200-2400FPS velocity. It then got itself a bad name in africa because the low velocity didn't always yield enough penetration. Hence jack lotts creation. The case if just enough longer to allow for the extra powder capacity. Rechambering a 458 to the lott is easy, and you can still fire regular 458's in it this makes it a logical round. Fire both before you decide which to hunt with. the lott's recoil is quite heavy, and some can't shoot it well. If you can, by all means use it. |
