I think the barrel band is over rated. I have a 7 1/2 lb (all in including scope) 375 Weatherby and I shoot it with and without a sling, no barrel band, and it's never gotten close to biting me. They do look pretty on safari rifles though, I have one on my 500 Jeffery.
