Well gentlemen, I finally ordered those Recknagel mounts from NECG, and foumd a nice old Pecar 6x54 scope on eBay. This morning I decided I'd torque the rings to my normal 20-in-lbs, and lo and behold the screws just kept on going amd going... Well anyway I finally got it nice and tight and checked out my handiwork in the light of the sun and guess what? The scope tube had buckled and pinched in at all four ring seams! ARGH!! Ruined scope! I never expected that from a steel tube!

I am consoling myself by saying if the scope couldn't handle a measly 20-in-lbs then it sure as heck couldn't handle life aboard a rifle chambered in .470 Capstick! Ah well. I suppose I'll need to search for another scope now.
