Hi fourbore, I went through the same decision process and ended up with a CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. I was concerned about feeding, but was also concerned with the little bit of bolt face that would be left if I went with a 505 Gibbs. The 505 Gibbs is definitely a more impressive round! And yes, I've had feeding problems and yes I'm a stickler. I've had Harlan at Triple River (CZ Custom Shop) who made it take it back once, and also had Wayne at AHR work on it a bit. It's close, but not 100% reliable so I'm sending it out once again. All told, I have just over $2k in it (I didn't start out with a 500 Jeffery but had a 375 H&H rebarreled which may have been part of my problem). It's accurate and fun to shoot (but not off of a bench!) but doesn't pass my test yet of filling the magazine with dummy rounds, cycling the action rapidly and repeating it 100 times without a failure. I typically get to between 60 and 80 times before it fails to feed, it never fails to extract. By the time I get to Africa I'm sure it will be all the way there though ... |
