Re: CZ 550 in 505 Gibbs

I thought about the two big 50's offered by CZ and choose the 505 because I like the round better. On a more emotional level yes - I choose the Gibbs for the history and romance of the round and for the looks. The looks difference is dramatic! I suggest you examine both prior to changing your mind and going to the Jeff. The Jeff is short fat round, with a rebated rim and short neck. I am sure it can work, but feeding problems were reported in the past history. The original 23 Jeffrey guns were single stack feed, that probably did much to reduce feeding problems. The 505 is a big round, long case, long neck and no rebate compromise. IMHO - impressive as all get out. The 505 is better suited to staggered magazine and although the rim diameter is large for the CZ bolt face, it does fit. If the 505 can be considered margin in size for the CZ, then by the same consideration 500J is small for the CZ. The 500Jeff is really an ugly compromise designed to fit in a standard Mauser and IMHO is a waste of a magnum action.

None, of this is in any way meant to be a practical consideration, just my 2c on a side by side comparison of these two 50's. In the CZ, I opted for the Gibbs and never looked back. What and beauty of a round and what a chance to relive history. The function and reliability of my CZ have been perfect and I cannot say the same for my cheap 458Lott in same. The custom shop 505 priced under $3k is the chance of a lifetime (to own a Gibbs). It is no trick to build a 500Jeff (well maybe it is feeding, but length is no problem). Until the CZ550 the mighty Gibbs was homeless. Now, that has changed and we are a better world for it.

If you dont count the 50bmg bullets which are too long, seems to me all or most of the best bullets are available in both 505 and 510. It not a shortage of bullet choice but a shortage of $$$ that limit bullet purchase. Casting might be best route for low cost practice.

I am not sure how to post? Should I reply to the last post in the thread chuck? Or Empire to whom I am speaking?

I registered last year and talked about my CZ550 problems in 458Lott but now it says I only have 1 post, so that is weird. My big bore experience is limited (shooting but no safari for me). I have three CZ550's: The 505 Gibbs which I love, a 375 rebuild by AHR which is also a great gun and one off the boat in 458Lott that has performed very poorly.
