Re: Building up .404 Jeffery on standard M98

Panther do you intend to run the 404 full throttle (2400fps MV) or just stick to the original performance or slightly modernised performance of 2150 – 2250 fps MV?
The Husky will be a nice light handling rifle now and it could be worth considering a re-barrel to 10.75x68 which with modern 400gr bullets and powders, gets you an original spec 404 while retaining the close to unaltered standard action. Admittedly cases are not so common for the 68 compared with the 404 but all other components are common to both.

If I’d had the choice I would have preferred to have my standard length Oberndorf Mauser left as original in its 10.75x68 guise. It would have been a light sweet shooting 404 equivalent with the modern components available to reload with now.

As it is it’s still a nice if not a little hard kicking 404J Mauser even at original MV specs.

The option would be worth considering if you are not already fixed on a full blown 404.

Hi Eagle27,
Thanks for your suggestion. At the moment I've no plans to reload this stuff so, I'll stick to factory ammo with standard vilocity (range of 2300fps). Eventually, I would be reloading but have no plans to hot load it (remember it's a standard length Mauser action).
Good Day.
