Re: 458 Tropical Rechambered to 470 NE

Trex

.458 WM, .458 Lott, .450x31/4" NE, .450 No.2, .470 NE etc, etc, are all pretty much clones. Why not step up a notch for a real improvement in horsepower with a .500x3"NE??

The astronomical cost of .470 NE ammo makes it a handloading proposition anyway!

Cost of rebarreling wouldn't be much different to re-boring and re-chambering for .470 NE, and in a properly stocked and headspaced falling block action like the Ruger No.1, at 101/2 pounds it would be a pussycat to shoot.

I used to benchrest a .500x3" NE Westley Richards Falling Block, complete with steel butt-plate, that all up weighed in at 9 pounds! A mate has a Ruger No.1 in the same calibre, and it too is gentler on the shoulder than my 11 pound .470 NE. Just something about the cartridge that makes it easy to shoot, and seems to be inherently accurate. There is a good range of lighter projectiles available for range plinking or hunting lighter game, such as Woodleigh's 440 grainers.
