I do not own a Ruger #1 however I do have strong opinions about brakes. First I would not own a rifle with a brake. If your gun has a “recoil” issue, there are several other things one can do that will work much better. First Most brakes only reduce recoil by about 5% there are better at reducing muzzle rise. The trade off is the expositional increase in report. A better way to manage recoil is through the use of “dead mules” or other systems of adding weight to a stock. The #1’s I have picked up are pretty heavy in the first place, and I would only add a dead mule in the four end If I felt that a good decelerator recoil pad did not salve the problem. Another way to manage recoil (though controversial on big bore rifles) is the thumbhole stock. A well made TH will reduce recoil by some 50 to 70%. I have seen two very nice TH stocks put on #1’s. They looked great and felt great. (although I did not fire the weapon) One last thought on recoil is for the shouter to use the sling around the non shouting arm. As the #1 Tropical has a well placed barrel band, using the sling to steady the rifle and reduce barrel rise seems like a must. This is just MHO. |
